Black’s Men’s Wear is a historic downtown Ada, Oklahoma apparel staple that has been clothing the community since 1951. Located at 109 W Main St, the locally owned shop is deeply woven into the fabric of the city’s business district, specializing in suits, shoes, casual wear, and tuxedo rentals.
The store was originally established by Ronald and Elizabeth Black. In 1968, a college student named Joe Landrum began working at the shop. Following Mr. Black's passing in 1971, Landrum purchased the business.
Joe Landrum operated Black's Men’s Wear as a cornerstone of downtown for decades, earning a reputation for exceptional customer service and community support. Over the years, the store expanded its offerings to include both men's and boy's lines, featuring high-quality brands like Polo and Tommy Bahama and Peter Millar.
Landrum passed away in late 2025, but his enduring legacy as a pillar of the Main Street community remains, with the store continuing to operate and serve Ada gentlemen under new ownership.
New owners Martin and Shari Powell are striving to keep the deep traditions of Black’s customer service and style, while modernizing the store’s inventory management, advertising and social media presence. Other additions include new brands like Filson, The Normal Brand, Smathers and Branson, Oulaki, Good Good golf. Favorites like Peter Millar, Ralph Lauren and Tommy Bahama men’s and women’s have all been restocked. Small sizes for young men and boys have also been added,
Martin is a retired dentist who grew up in McAlester and spent his summers in Ada. He was previously chief of dental services for the Chickasaw nation. “During my years at East Central University, I had the privilege to work for Joe Landrum. Being trained by the best has made it easy for me to fall back in love with customer service and stylish men’s clothing.”
Shari has been involved in the Ada community since 1994 in retail, a medical clinic and teaching English at Ada High School. She currently serves on the board at McCall’s Communities for Lifetime Enrichment. The Powell’s have five grown children, seven grandchildren and enjoy boating, golf and their dog Pippa.
Black’s Men’s & Ladies Wear provides full-service tuxedo rentals and professional custom fittings directly at their downtown storefront. Because they operate as a traditional brick-and-mortar clothing boutique, their fitting and rental services rely on personalized, in-person care rather than automated online forms.
